- How do you do, Buñuel, to make such interesting films with so low budgets?
I answered that for me this is not a problem. It was this or nothing. I tied my history to the sum of money that I had available. In Mexico, it never went over 24 days of shooting. But I knew that the modesty of my budgets were the condition for my freedom. And I added:
- You, who are a famous director, do an experiment. You can allow yourself everything. Try to get this freedom. For example, you’ve just made a 5 million dollar movie. Direct now a 40 thousand dollar and you’ll see, by yourself, the difference.
He exclaimed:
- No way! If I would do this in Hollywood everybody would think I’m going downhill, that I’m really bad. I would be ruined! I would never shoot anything else!
He was serious. This conversation made me sad.
