three gifts that I received for no particular reason.

isn’t it good to gain or give something just as a keepsake, without any special dates?

Between 1992 and 1995, Sarajevo was constantly bombarded by the Serbs who surrounded it. The order was: bombard until all die or are on the verge of madness. But they survived and are still there – the children are already adults; the adults, older men. Not only did they survive, but they are surprisingly hospitable, cheerful, noisy.

They say it was terrible, but that after a certain time, one becomes accustomed to the explosions, lack of food, energy, water. We live in a particular way in the midst of terror. Oh, the glory of being able to forget a part of things and go forward.

And the city, with its own vitality, also carries its scars: landmines have not been turned off, shot buildings, cemeteries everywhere and Sarajevo Roses.

When the bombs exploded, they formed a circular pattern on the floor with a deep center and smaller holes around. At the time of rebuilding the city, signs of explosion left where people have been killed by such attacks were covered by a red resin, creating shapes that resemble a flower and also a pool of blood. These are the Roses of Sarajevo. They are scattered throughout the city, without any sign or indication. If today it is harder to find them – the color is faded by time and people and cars passing over them for years – they are still not rare, as a simple reminder of a tragic time. Without the dramatic impact of the cemeteries, roses always appeared so suddenly that left me with the impression that I was never prepared for them.
